Why aren’t there more white roofs?

January 2, 2009

tiledroofSome 14 or so years ago, when I first came to Australia from colder climes, I noticed that white seemed to be the colour of choice for most cars.

Makes sense I thought; you feel hotter when you wear dark clothing on a sunny day, and the same probably goes for dark cars too.

So you’d think that maybe houses would benefit from the theory as well?

With that in mind then, and if you live in a sunnier part of the country, next time you’re travelling through your neighbourhood, (sustainably of course!) check out the roofs of the houses.

Are many of them white? Maybe not. But if more of them were, do you think it would be a step to lessening our love of air conditioners?
